McPadden Scoops Award

The Offaly GAA Awards Night will take place on Saturday the 11th of January in the Bridge House who are sponsors of the event. It will see former legends of hurling and football introduced into the hall of fame. St. Rynagh\’s Pauduge Mulhare gets the hurling award while former Offaly All-Ireland medal winner at Senior, Under 21 and all star Minor Mike Ryan gets the football award. Rhode have had great success lately in this prestigious event and this year is no exception with Rhode\’s Paul McPadden getting the Under 21 football award with his wonderful displays for the parish side St Michael\’s great win in this year\’s Under 21 Championship win as he captained the side he led by example been the top scorer on 1-14 in the three games played. He also represented the club at county level in this grade along with his brother James for the past couple of years. Tickets for the night can be obtained from John Glennon 087 2715 804.

Rhode OG – 5 aside Soccer Christmas Tournament is on Sunday the 29th of December in St Brigid\’s GAA Ground

Everybody Welcome – Run off the extra few pounds gained from the turkey.

Rules and Information:

Teams of a minimum of 5 with 2 subs.

A group based tournament with top teams through to semi finals.

Each team will pre-pay €40 for entry and there will be prizes for victorious team.

Penalty shoot out and side events with shop on the day.

A fun day to raise money for the Parish Minor and U16 teams.

James Murphy and Seamus Maguire were the clubs reprehensives at the Offaly GAA county convention which was held in O\’Connor on Tuesday evening. It was a good convention with all aspects of the county\’s activities on and off the field discussed. Well done to Ballinamere who were awarded the chub of the years for 2013.

Hard luck to Ballinamere who were narrowly beaten by British champions Fulham Gaels on a score line of 1-8 to 0-10 in Birmingham on Sunday. It has been a great year for the Ballinamere club winning the Offaly and Leinster championship and were also creamed Offaly club of the year for at the Offaly convention.

There was no winner of the Rhode GAA Lotto for the week ending 9th of December for a Jackpot of €15,000. The numbers drawn were 6 12 16 27. The club like to thank all those who supported the draw and thanks to Killeen\’s for the use of their premises and for their help and cooperation. The following matched three numbers and received €50 each

Lotto this week is in Killeen\’s on Monday the 23rd at 8.30pm all promoters are asked to have their books in on time as this is Christmas week and it will give club members a chance to do other things as it will be just two days before Christmas.

The Rhode GAA Lotto is the main source of income the club has and now you can play online though our website. The good news is when you play the lotto online you are entitled to free draws, for example pay for seven draws receive the eighth one free, pay for fourteen draws receive two free and so on. In other words, the more you play the more free draws you are entitled to!!

Sympathy is extended to the Stephenson family of Rhode on the death of Peter at the great age of 99 who passed away on Monday night last and whose remains were interred in Rhode cemetery on Thursday. A native of Galway Peter come to work in Offaly in the thirties working in Tullamore and Rhode where he met and married his late wife Rose. Over the years he was a very important part of life in the community in Rhode where he was deeply involved. He was also deeply involved in the Rhode GAA Club over the years as a club official in various positions and he was a County Board delegate for a number of years. He was a regular follower of GAA, he has been a lifelong member of the club and for the last forty years he has been patron of the club along with the now deceased Fr. Kelly and Fr Kaye as late as Friday nightc he was re-elected patron of the club along with Fr. Greg Corcoran. To his son Paul and his family in Galway and friends all at Rhode GAA Club and indeed the wider community sends their deepest sympathies. May he Rest In Peace.
